The famous six

The days people fly to Jamaica for.

A terraced waterfall you climb hand in hand, a bamboo raft with a captain and a pole, a cliff bar at sunset, and a bay that lights up when you swim in it. Six days, and the best way to book each one.

Before the pool bar

Sangster to your hotel, sorted before you land.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 429 travellers through the busiest arrivals door

Montego Bay lands four flights at once and the taxi rank knows it. A named driver at arrivals, or the fast-track lounge upstairs, turns the worst hour of the trip into twenty minutes. Negril is 90 minutes west, Ocho Rios two hours east.

The fast lane

Skip the arrivals hall entirely

20 min· from $40· both terminals

Met at the airbridge, walked past the immigration queue, and handed a rum punch while somebody else collects the bags. Worth it on a Saturday, when four charters land inside an hour.

Door to door

A driver who waits for your delay

90 min to Negril· from $60· flight tracked

Private vans priced per vehicle, not per head, so a family of five pays once. The good operators watch the inbound flight and are still there when you clear customs at midnight.

The long side

Two hours east along the A1

2 h· from $55· coast road

Ocho Rios sits on the far side of the island from its airport. Book the run in advance and the drive becomes the first sightseeing of the trip: Falmouth, the Martha Brae, Runaway Bay.

Budget first

What a day out in Jamaica costs.

A river raft costs less than dinner at the hotel. A private driver for a whole day costs less than two coach seats. Here is the whole island, cheapest first.

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios keeps the waterfalls.

Dunn’s River is the one on the postcards, but the hills behind town hide the Blue Hole, Konoko and a river you can float down on an inner tube. Cruise ships dock here on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so an early start is the whole trick.

Nowhere else

Three things you can only do in Jamaica.

Beaches and catamarans belong to the whole Caribbean. A glowing bay, a bar standing in open sea and a hot-stone massage on a river raft belong to this island.

Falmouth, after dark

The Bay That Lights Up

Where the Martha Brae meets the sea at Falmouth, the brackish water holds a bloom of microscopic organisms that flash pale blue when anything disturbs them. Boats leave after full dark, cut the engine in the middle, and let people swim. Your arms trail light. There are only a handful of bays like it on earth and this is the brightest.

A mile offshore

Floyd’s Pelican Bar

Off Parottee Point on the South Coast, a driftwood shack stands on stilts on a sandbar with nothing around it but sea. A fisherman built it in 2001 because he wanted somewhere to drink. You arrive by small boat, order a Red Stripe, and stand in waist-deep water while your lunch is grilled behind you.

On the Martha Brae

The Limestone Massage

The bamboo raft is the famous part. What surprises people is the stop halfway: the captain pulls in at a limestone bank, and a masseuse works river stones warmed in the sun down the length of your legs while the raft sits in the current. It is a local invention, it costs a few dollars extra, and nobody regrets it.

Negril

Negril runs on sunset time.

Seven miles of sand on one side of town, limestone cliffs on the other, and an unspoken agreement that nothing important happens before four in the afternoon. The cliff bars fill an hour before the sun drops, and the catamarans get there by sea.

Plan backwards

Book these before you leave home.

Most of Jamaica can be arranged from the hotel lobby the night before. These four cannot. They run on tides, on darkness, on one departure a day, and on a fixed number of seats per flight bank.

  1. 01Club Mobay Sangster Airport VIP Lounge with Priority EntryA fixed number of places per arrivals bank. On a Saturday four charters land together and it is gone.
  2. 02Luminous Lagoon Night Tour from Montego BayOne boat window a night, after full dark. Moonless nights are the bright ones and they book out first.
  3. 03YS Falls, Black River Safari, Appleton Rum Tour OR Pelican Bar (Choose Up to 3)A boat ride to a sandbar. It runs on the tide and the weather, not on demand, and there is no walk-up.
  4. 04Bob Marley’s Nine Mile Admission and Guided Tour from Montego BayA long inland day from either coast, with a hard departure time. Leave it to the morning of and there is no seat left.

When it rains

A Jamaican shower lasts twenty minutes.

Rain here is an afternoon event, not a day. It arrives over the hills, empties, and leaves the road steaming. Nothing on this list cares: you are already wet on the river, and the great houses, caves and rum estates have roofs. Only the catamarans and the cliff jumps genuinely mind.
